BMW’s N47 engine is a four-cylinder diesel engine that replaced it’s predecessor, the M47. This engine is fitted across the BMW model range from the 1Series to the X3 between March 2007 and September 2014 and is prone to excessive timing chain wear which can cause premature failure. Symptoms can include a rattle on start-up or a change in engine note where the chain is hitting on the guides and sometimes they give you no warning at all.

There is no service schedule for replacing the timing chain, it’s ‘Lifetime’ however is on average around 100,000 miles but that will be heavily dependant on how the car has been maintained from new, we have seen instances of snapped timing chains from 50,000 miles so it is something we strongly recommend you plan to have replaced.

Our N47 timing chain repairs are booked to be completed on the same day, we start the repair at 8am and if all goes to plan you’ll be driving away just after lunchtime which means we are lucky to have customers from all over the UK. Only xDrive & some MINI models may be required for more than one day but please get in touch to confirm.
