BMW N57 TIMING CHAIN REPLACEMENT

BMW’s N57 engine is a straight-6 diesel engine that replaced it’s predecessor, the M57. This engine is fitted across the BMW model range from 1Series to 7Series including a number of the X platform vehicles between 2008 & 2019.

As with the four-cylinder N47 the N57 engine is prone to excessive timing chain wear which can lead to premature failure. Symptoms can include a rattle on start-up or a change in engine note where the chain is hitting on the guides and sometimes they give you no warning at all.

There is no service schedule for replacing the timing chain, it’s ‘Lifetime’ however is on average around 100,000 miles but that will be heavily dependant on how the car has been maintained from new, we have seen instances of snapped timing chains from 50,000 miles so it is something we strongly recommend you plan to have replaced.

Our N57 timing chain repairs are booked to be completed on the same day for 3,4,5,6 & 7Series vehicles, we start the repair at 8am and if all goes to plan you’ll be driving away the same afternoon which has led us having customers from all over the UK. X3, X4, X5 & X6 models are required for 2 days to complete the repair due to the additional work required.

Our repair includes a Genuine BMW timing chain kit which comprises of 9 components; upper & lower chains, 2 upper guides & 2 lower guides, top sprocket and upper & lower tensioner, we also replace the rocker cover gasket, fuel injector seals, rear main oil seal, engine oil & filter and coolant. We will also carry out an air conditioning service as part of the repair*

In addition to timing chain failures we have also seen many bottom end bearing failures that have resulted in serious engine failures. The result of these failures often means a substantial repair cost and time without your vehicle. With your engine removed for the timing chain replacement there is no better time to futureproof your engine by carrying out our bottom end maintenance where we will replace the main and big end bearings, new bolts and a new genuine oil pump. This isn’t a cheap repair but the prevention is more than half the cost of the repair should they fail so we always strongly advise this is considered if you plan on relying on the car.
